Cowgirl Copper Hair

When it comes to 2024’s biggest hair trends, cowgirl copper hair (also known as cowboy copper) has taken the social media world by storm—and it shows no signs of slowing down. Cowgirl copper hues are expected to be everywhere this fall, ranging from the traditional dark copper shade to brighter, more vivid takes on the style.

This gorgeous reddish-brown hair color offers something for everyone, with autumn-inspired, earthy tones that flatter nearly all hair types and complexions. Cowgirl copper embodies everything we love about fall hair colors: It’s rustic and warm-toned with hints of shimmering orange, gold, and brown.

What Is Cowgirl Copper?

Cowgirl copper hair color is inspired by the rugged terrain of the American frontier and the adventurous spirit of cowboys and cowgirls. It gets its name from the warm hues of caramel leather reminiscent of the Wild West aesthetic trending on runways, on the red carpet with celebrities and in street style.

What Color Is Cowgirl Copper?

This multi-dimensional, natural-looking hair color falls midway between a true copper and auburn. It blends rich copper tones with deep orange, gold, and caramel for lots of depth and dimension. Cowgirl copper is less vivid than a traditional copper or red hair color, which makes it very wearable while still making a statement.

Who Should Try Cowgirl Copper Hair?

The cowgirl copper trend is extremely versatile and can flatter all skin tones, undertones, and base colors—including natural blondes, brunettes, and redheads. It’s a great option for clients who want to try a copper or red shade but prefer a slightly deeper, muted variation that gives off cozy, autumn vibes. On natural blondes, cowgirl copper can make your clients’ features pop, and on brunettes, it can accentuate their natural warm tones.

How To Create Cowgirl Copper Hair for Your Clients

Cowgirl copper hair color requires a delicate mix that balances red, brown, and gold tones. The ideal approach will depend on how red or copper your client wants to go, their base color, hair type, and the coloring technique you’ll be using.

As a general rule of thumb, use a darker copper as the base for clients with naturally lighter hair. For clients with darker hair, try using a slightly lighter copper as your base. Then, add some blonde or brown to your mix to adjust the warmth and achieve your desired copper shade.

When it comes to color application, cowgirl copper can be applied all over for a total color transformation. Or, if your client wants to try out the shade with slightly less maintenance, you can also recommend a cowgirl copper balayage, dipped ends, money pieces, or ombré—just to name a few.

Cowgirl Copper Hair Colors That Are Perfect for Fall

Here, we’re sharing some of our favorite cowgirl copper hair colors for fall by stylist Coco Hoffman plus coloring tips to recreate them. They’ll surely have your client wanting to pull on her cowboy boots for a pumpkin spice latte run.

Cowgirl Bropper With Copper Highlights

This hair color is equal parts spicy copper and warm brown, making it the epitome of a fall mood board. It blends two of 2024’s biggest hair color trends—bropper hair and cowgirl copper. Bropper hair color, as the name suggests, combines brown and copper with pops of auburn and red for a soft, romantic effect.

To get the look, start by creating bropper as the base color. Then, add hand-painted highlights in a brighter copper shade (like
Pulp Riot Demi-Permanent Liquid Color 7-4 + 4-5) for the ultimate copper-on-copper finish.

Fiery Burnt Orange Copper

For a brighter, more daring take on the cowgirl copper trend, try a burnt orange look. This on-trend color is great for adventurous clients who want to make a statement with their hair color. It blends shades of orange, yellow, and red for an all-over copper color that’s fiery and dimensional.

Recreate this autumn orange color by mixing
Pulp Riot Faction8 Permanent Hair Color 5-8 into 6-4 with 8-34/-44 on the ends. Then, paint balayage highlights throughout the hair to give this look a stunning finish that complements both lighter and darker skin tones.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to communicate with your client beforehand that a color this vibrant will require more maintenance than other shades, both in terms of salon visits and at-home maintenance. A weekly deep conditioning treatment, like L’ANZA Keratin Healing Oil Intensive Hair Masque, and a monthly protein treatment are great ways to help keep your clients’ hair looking healthy and shiny.

Cinnamon Spice Copper Color Melt

If dimensional color is your goal, look no further than this copper color melt. It has all the elements you need for a flawless fall hair color: rich copper, pops of deep red, and golden highlights.

To achieve this multi-toned color, begin with a warm copper base—like Pulp Riot Faction8 Permanent Hair Color in 8-44 Copper Copper—and melt in blonde highlights and dark mahogany lowlights throughout the hair. This color looks best with plenty of shine and movement, so remember to finish off your client’s style with a finishing spray like
Redken Shine Flash Spray.

Rust Copper

Warm rust tones can be used to create a subtle, balanced color for brunettes seeking dimension and/or a muted pop of copper color. Rust hair colors are a great recommendation for clients with curly hair, as these copper-red shades can give curly hair textures added definition and depth.

They’re also an excellent way to add warmth for clients with deeper skin tones. For rust copper hair, you’ll want to focus on mixing a rich shade that doesn’t have any bright orange tones, like Pulp Riot Demi-Permanent Liquid Color 4-5 + 7-4 + 6-6.

Burgundy With Copper Highlights

Dark red hair that resembles red wine is another color trend that’s predicted to be popular this fall. For this look, you can add a subtle hint of burgundy (using a shade like Pulp Riot Faction8 Permanent Hair Color in 5-55 Red/Violet/Violet) atop a dark brunette base. Then, create a few hand-painted, chunky highlights in a true copper color for a creative twist on the cowgirl copper hair color.

Soft Copper With Gold Pieces

This color’s a little sugar and just the right amount of spice. It has a true cowgirl copper as its base with sun-kissed, face-framing highlights to lightning up the look. The style is perfect for clients who like to be on the blonder side or prefer a color with more contrast.

While
blonde money pieces are a great way to highlight your client’s facial features, they also require the right maintenance when your client leaves the salon. Matrix Unbreak My Blonde Bond Strengthening Shampoo and Conditioner are an ideal color care duo for blondes because they reinforce weakened hair bonds while strengthening and softening the hair.

Chocolate Brown With Copper Ends

Not everyone is ready to take the plunge into an all-over cowgirl copper hair color, and that’s where your talent and creativity as a stylist can really shine. For clients who prefer a lower-maintenance option, you can try recommending copper-dipped ends (where color is applied only to the ends of the hair).

This style works on any base color but looks especially gorgeous on complementary warm shades, like chocolate brown or espresso. It can be replicated using a dip dye or balayage technique, depending on your clients’ preferences.
